I dreamed I was a warrior whose cuirass
\nShining in splendour. Paled Apollo\u2019s light.
\nMassive my shield and fierce it\u2019s polish\u2019d brass
\nAnd terrible my helmet\u2019s nodding height.
\nWithin my sword dwelt Slaughter and pale Fright
\nRan oe\u2019r the lands, submerged neath sable pall,
\nFor with my reeking triumph fell bleak night
\nAnd death. Yet all this had I left, to fall
\nVanquished before thy feet and own myself thy thrall<\/p>\n
And yet again I dreamed: that Music\u2019s pow\u2019rs
\nIntoxicating, from my fingers flow\u2019
\nWhile nations wondered and the woodland flow\u2019d
\nEntranc\u2019d , in still more perfect beauty glow\u2019d.
\nAt times my strains like shrieking tunes rode
\nUpon the tempest\u2019s height: at times they fell
\nWith sigh as soft as snow; yet ever strode
\nAs victors o\u2019er men\u2019s natures. But their spell
\nTo thee could not express what all my
\nHeart would tell.<\/p>\n
At last the radiance of pure happiness
\nPoured on my soul. I dreamed a perfect dream
\nAnd Love fulfill\u2019d my life with lovliness
\nAnd hid in glory that faint, pallid gleam
\nOf War\u2019s long stress and Music\u2019s pulsing stream.
\n\u201cTo be thy lover\u201d Such soft harmony
\nLies in those words, which sweeter sounding seem
\nThan all the magic strains of Fa\u00ebry.
