\nAll speeding on so pensively.
\nOblivious of my stare.
\nYet all the time I was aware
\nThat one had gone who should be there,
\nThus, searching in my memory,
\nI could not think who it should be
\nTill, happily,<\/p>\n
I saw a soldier home from France
\n\u201c\u2019Tis he\u201d, I thought, \u201cThat merry glance!
\n\u201c\u2019Tis Cupid who, his bow and dart
\n\u201cFor bomb and bayonet laid apart,
\n\u201cNo longer wars on human heart
\n\u201cBut wages warfare new.
\n\u201cYet that,\u201d I ponder\u2019d,\u201d can\u2019t be true.
\n\u201cThe land has lovers still a few.
\n\u201cWho then can Cupid\u2019s place supply,
\n\u201cSince still his arrows seem to fly
\n\u201cunerringly?\u201d<\/p>\n
Anon a maiden chanc\u2019d to pass,
\nA bright and winsome, laughing lass;
\nWho, as she went, provokingly
\nEnslav\u2019d mankind and dext\u2019rously
\nContrived, their hearts should captive be
\nTo her whom next they view\u2019d.
\nNow Cupid fights, his ancient feud
\nIs by his sister still pursued:
\nBut deadlier her artillery
\n(His bow and quiver idle lie),
\nHer roguish eye.<\/p>\n
