{"id":2619,"date":"2017-08-07T10:23:05","date_gmt":"2017-08-07T09:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/warpoets.org.uk\/worldwar1\/?page_id=2619"},"modified":"2017-08-07T10:44:54","modified_gmt":"2017-08-07T09:44:54","slug":"at-eventide","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/warpoets.org.uk\/worldwar1\/resources\/unknown-war-poets\/unknown-war-poets-bertram-andrews\/at-eventide\/","title":{"rendered":"At Eventide &#8211; Bertram Andrews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The scented zephyr whispers down the hill.<br \/>\nThe trees droop low to catch his message sweet.<br \/>\nRippling, it flows from bough to bough until<br \/>\nIt tells me, murmuring softly and discreet.<br \/>\nMy love is nigh \u2013 and all my pulses fill<br \/>\nWith longing: while the summer beauties fleet<br \/>\nUnseen, unmarked, before my eyes that strain<br \/>\nFor that first glimpse of her whose magic<br \/>\nStirs my brain.<\/p>\n<p>The summer takes a fresher sweetness now<br \/>\nThe flow\u2019rets bloom in colours yet more fair<br \/>\nAnd those caressing breezes softer flow<br \/>\nAnd add more radiant perfume to the air.<br \/>\nEnchanted, Nature\u2019s beauties brighter glow.<br \/>\nShe dons a magic loveliness more rare.<br \/>\nMy love is nigh \u2013 the earth becomes more bright,<br \/>\nAnd learns to show more lovely in my<br \/>\nloved one\u2019s sight.<\/p>\n<p>The brazen sun his boldness finds too gay,<br \/>\nConfronted with that beauty: and apace<br \/>\nRed and asham\u2019d, he hastes to flee away:<br \/>\nAnd earth, relieved, still finds a newer grace<br \/>\nWhen he is gone. And in the twilight grey<br \/>\nEthereal shines that perfect wistful face.With benediction stars awake high above<br \/>\nAnd all my heart goes out in strong<br \/>\nAbiding love.<\/p>\n<p>In passion\u2019s colours, scarlet, purple, mauve.<br \/>\nThe sun expires: and silver floods the land<br \/>\nAll virginal and pure the moonbeams rove<br \/>\nAnd line with light the earth on ev\u2019ry hand.<br \/>\nThere, where the fierce descending Phoebus strove<br \/>\nWith Dian\u2019s onrush, now a stately band<br \/>\nWhite, fleecy clouds, float through the steel-blue sky<br \/>\nOn earth is peace, and in my soul, for Love is nigh.<\/p>\n<p>The nestling villages in silence sleep<br \/>\nThe little rivers murmur quietly.<br \/>\nAthwart the moonlit hills the shadows creep<br \/>\nAnd all the night seems full of mystery.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s silences my inmost fibres steep<br \/>\nAnd lull my spirit to an ecstacy.<br \/>\nCathedral-like the stillness broods, and rest<br \/>\nSentient of Love, lies like a garment on Earth\u2019s breast.<\/p>\n<p>Gailes<br \/>\nJuly 1916<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The scented zephyr whispers down the hill.
