He is credited with coining the word &#8216;Surrealism&#8217; and writing one of the earliest works described as surrealist. Apollinaire joined the French army in December 1914 and was posted to the front in April 1915. On 17 March 1916 he received a shrapnel wound to his temple for which he was trepanned and invalided out of the army.
