Ivor Gurney was educated at the King’s School, Gloucester and became a chorister at the cathedral there before going on to the Royal College of Music in 1911. Although he volunteered for active service in August 1914 he was turned down on the grounds of poor eyesight before being accepted as a private in the Gloucestershire Regiment in early 1915.<\/p>\n
In a letter to a school friend in February 1915 he wrote that ‘there is a most bloody and damnable war to go through’ but suggested that it would<\/p>\n
make us so strong, so happy, so sure of ourselves, so crowded with fruitful memories of joy that we may be able to live in towns or earn our living at some drudgery and yet create whole and pure joy for others.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
