Edward Tennant was born on 1 July 1897, the son of Edward Tennant, who became Lord Glenconner in 1911, and Pamela Wyndham, a writer. Nicknamed ‘Bim’, Edward was educated at Winchester College until the age of 17, when it was decided he would lodge with a family in Germany to learn the language, in preparation for the Diplomatic Service. Thus when war broke out he found himself free of school and\u00a0 immediately joined the Grenadier Guards. After a year’s training in London he went to Bovington Camp, Marlow in August 1915 where his company of signallers earned distinction. Later that month he was especially selected to go out to France, although Brigade Orders had just been issued that no one should leave England before nineteen years of age.<\/p>\n
He was killed by a sniper during the Battle of the Somme on 22nd September, 1916.<\/p>\n
