A miner from a boy
\nWearing his scratched helmet
\nClimbing in the cage
\nRopes of steel
\nTonnes of metal zooming him down, down, down
\nTo the pit of darkness<\/p>\n
Ending the shift
\nRiding up the shaft
\nBlinking at bright sunshine.<\/p>\n
Plunging again into a different darkness
\nOf trenches, madness and shell holes……..
\nSurviving this, returning to the pits.<\/p>\n
No longer a boy.<\/p>\n
Now an old man
\nWheezing emphysema
\nSucking cannel coal.
\nRemembering his comrades.<\/p>\n
