Educated at Winchester College and Trinity College, Oxford, Nichols became a second lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery in October 1914. In 1916 he was invalided home with shell shock. In 1917 he was attached to the Foreign Office and in 1917 went with the Ministry of Information to New York.<\/p>\n
Having begun to write verse at school he became one of the more highly acclaimed younger poets of the day.
