Pupils attending Haileybury’s Poetry of the First World War Sixth Form Conference on 17 October 2014 are invited to enter the Poster Competition. All submitted entries will be displayed at the event, offering a unique opportunity for pupils to share their work with others. A prize will be awarded for the poster that is recognised to express the most innovative and insightful consideration of war poetry by the panel of judges.
The poster should be an informative display of personal research and interpretation which conveys a good understanding of how a particular poet addresses or reflects on World War One in his or her writing. You may focus on poets writing either during the war, or after the conflict ended. You are also welcome to consider the writings of non-English writers.
Posters may include:
- The poet’s biographical information.
- Information about the reception history of the piece.
- An extract of the poem, or copy of the whole poem.
- A critical analysis of a war poem that considers how structure, formal devices and literary devices combine to convey meaning within the work.
- A detailed discussion of the themes or ideas that the work raises.
- A translation of the poem.
- A creative response to a particular poem.
- A discussion of how war is represented by women poets, whose work is often overlooked in critical discussions of World War One literatures.
The posters should be submitted as an A3 Word document and may include colour and visual imagery.
Entrants are asked to confirm that they intend to submit a poster by Friday 19 September 2014.
A final copy of the poster must be submitted by Friday 3 October 2014.
