Kevin Bowen was born in the West End of Boston, Massachusetts in 1946. At the age of 21 he was drafted and served in the First Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 in the Quant Tri Province near the demilitarized zone and the Tay Ninh province. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts-Boston in 1973 and earned his PhD in English Literature from the State University of New York. He became co-director of the William Joiner Center for the Study of War and its Social Consequences at the University of Massachusetts in 1984 and Director in 1993. His first collection of poetry, Playing Basketball with the Viet Cong, was published in 1994.
